Past Student of St James to be new Auxiliary Bishop of Brisbane

The College was delighted to learn the news that Pope Francis has appointed Fr Ken Howell, a former student of St James College and currently Parish Priest of Burleigh Heads Catholic Parish, as the new Auxiliary Bishop of Brisbane. The Episcopal Ordination of Bishop-Elect Howell will take place on June 14 at the Cathedral of St Stephen, Brisbane.

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a former student of St James has been appointed to such a position in the Catholic Church. While Fr Ken was administrator of the Cathedral, he was a frequent visitor to his old school, celebrating Mass for the students on a number of occasions and also as a guest at our Annual Awards Nights.

In a statement following his appointment, Fr Ken said: “I ask you to pray for me as I accept the invitation of our Holy Father to serve the Church as a member of the College of Bishops.”

The College takes this opportunity both to congratulate Fr Ken and also to wish him every blessing as he takes on this new and very important appointment.
