College Outdoor Education Camps Bring Out Resilience and Perseverance in Students
St James College Year 11 and Year 12 students had their skills put to the test as they attended assessment camps, at the college’s Outdoor Education Centre affectionately known as ‘Jimmies on the Dam’ at Lake Maroon Dam.
Year 11 Students began with a gruelling hike up to Yellow Pinch Lookout which rewarded their efforts with spectacular views of Mt Barney.
Canoeing skills were then required to paddle the six kilometres over to the Maroon Dam boat ramp, where they tacked a 15-kilometre hike only to return to base camp at 8.00pm.
The students used their navigation skills and night-time hiking safety procedures to traverse their way back from Cronan Creek Falls at the base of Mt Barney.
Year 12 students completed an untracked hike up to Yellow Pinch and on the second day of assessment the students travelled out to Wyaralong Dam and took part in a 17km hike along the shoreline of the dam. With this challenge, the students had full backpacks and had to navigate out to a base camp in the middle of the bush and back to the start of the dam wall.
St James College outdoor education teacher Mr Darrin Coombs said the ‘students showed amazing skills, resilience and perseverance, with many challenges being presented to them throughout both camps.”
“It was so great to see everyone putting in the effort to complete their assessments.”
“Until next time enjoy the great outdoors and find an adventure,” Mr Coombs said.
