St James College has several strategic partnerships designed to pave the way for students to discover their future careers. Students learn about careers, experience them firsthand, and gain current industry skills and work experience.

One such partnership is with the Queensland Government’s Gateway to Industry Schools program, which raises awareness of a range of industries and career pathways. It gives students access to mentors, real-world work experience, and exclusive opportunities to visit workplaces and attend networking events.

To enhance the learning experiences offered by St James College, a group of Year 12 students recently attended a Women in Construction Networking Breakfast, where they connected with industry leaders and heard inspiring career stories from female trades professionals.

Year 12 student Molly left the event feeling empowered, saying, “What I took away from today is that no career is out of reach, and I’m now really interested in exploring carpentry or cabinet making.”

The event also highlighted the growing demand for trades in general, including bricklaying, scaffolding, tiling, and plumbing.

In another opportunity through the program, three Year 12 students were selected to be interviewed for a prestigious work experience program with the McNab Group, one of Australia’s leading construction and development companies.

These opportunities are made possible through the College’s industry partnerships, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in carpentry, painting, plastering, and concreting, developing in-demand skills for the workforce.

St James College Director of Careers, Skills, Partnerships, and Pathways Tony Ninasivinche shared the impact of the Gateway programs and how they prepare students who are skilled up and ready to step into their careers.

"Through this initiative, our students gain work experience, enjoy mentoring and insights into the booming construction industry.”

“These opportunities mean our students are work ready and skilled in trades that are in high demand by their employers of the future.

“The Gateway program is about more than just skills, it’s about opening doors, building confidence, and helping young people step into fulfilling careers," said Tony Ninasivinche.

St James College is also proudly connected to Gateway to Industry Schools programs in hospitality, construction, manufacturing, and health, bridging the gap between education and employment, and setting students on pathways to rewarding careers.
